For this Graphic Design 1 project, I created a set 3 of graphic patterns called "Hair, Hair Everywhere!"
The Challenge:
Create 3 patterns following a unique theme and create all elements using no more than 10 graphic forms. Present the patterns as a set.
The Process:
Inspired by "wash day" routines (the 24-hour timeframe set aside to wash and style curly hair), I developed subcategories related to hair products and tools, a variety of hair textures, and hair trimming.
After finetuning my sketches, I identified the 9 graphic forms that make up my icons and produced the illustrations using Adobe Illustrator.
Next, I organized the graphic forms into black and white patterns, experimenting with opacity, cropping, and composition.
Lastly, I conducted a color study to experiment with various color palletes. I decided to convey a fun, culturally expressive aesthetic, leading me to develop a palette with brown and yellow, colors frequently associated with products catered to Black hair.
The Outcome: A complete set of 3 connected patterns expressing various aspects of the wash day routine created using simple graphic elements.
